Child of Previous South African Head of State Zuma Rejects Terrorism Accusations as Legal Proceedings Commences
The child of previous South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terrorism-related accusations at the start of her trial in the coastal city of Durban city.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being tried over statements she published on social media several years back during deadly unrest in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the arrest of her parent.
A seven-day period of chaos in various areas of the country in mid-2021, including looting and arson, caused at least three hundred killed and resulted in damage worth an approximate 2.8 billion dollars (2.2 billion pounds).
Zuma-Sambudla has been alleged of encouraging this unrest and confronts charges of incitement to commit terror acts and public disorder.
History of the Case
The protests were focused in the provinces of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and followed the ex-leader's apprehension for ignoring a judicial ruling to testify at an investigation into accusations of corruption while he was holding office.
The defendant has consistently refuted the allegations against her, with her attorney earlier labelling the state's evidence as weak.
She has also consistently stated the allegations against her were an attempt to settle political grievances with her father after he established his own political organization and ran against the ANC.
Endorsement and Legal Defense
This was reinforced by the Zuma foundation, which stated the legal matter was an "misuse of authority" and a "coordinated attempt" of "politically motivated and familial targeting" against the former president and his kin.
A small number of supporters from her party, her party, gathered outside the judicial building, while her dad and other party leaders participated in the proceedings inside.
The defense has stated that the evidence presented by the state is inadequate and does not have compelling evidence for a criminal finding.
