The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of pitch

Following a drab weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had netted just one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
