Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
