No less than 64 Dead in Rio de Janeiro's Largest Security Action on Gangs
No less than 64 individuals lost their lives in a security raid against the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's records.
Four police officers lost their lives during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities stated. More than 80 individuals were detained.
Violent conflicts commenced when approximately 2,500 security personnel moved in on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho countered with gunfire, setting fire to barriers and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities stated.
The United Nations human rights body expressed being "shocked" by the police operation, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Mission Consequences
The informal settlements close to Rio's airport is considered to be the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.
Government representatives confirmed at least 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Numerous individuals were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
Community Response
Residents have described the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 people - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.
Roads remain closed across the area.
Gang Growth
The Red Command group have been expanding their territory across the Rio state, increasing drug trafficking routes and control of the hillside favelas.
Rio's police stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the raid, together with numerous weapons.
Raid Preparation
The coordinated mission by civil and military police comes after a twelve-month inquiry.
Many of the individuals are considered affiliates of a group from the Pará state who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.
