The Mystery Within that Case Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
For much of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned inside a mental fortress built from the past of Henry Creel. Their mission for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to witness again a defining event from Henry's childhood—an event that potentially carries the key to defeating him once and for all.

The Discovery in the Tunnel
When she finds Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a cave that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a spyglass found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.
There, they witness a Henry as a boy come across an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the act wasn't just a fight for life.
Like many elements this season, the truth about the mine shaft incident originates in the live show the prequel play.
An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission
This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a warship into a plane known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the captain, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.
That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to give to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. That traitor in the cavern is that employee.
Unlocking the Mystery
Based on what is known about the doctor's experiments, the container almost certainly contained vials of Captain Brenner's infected blood. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, causing the awakening of his powers—abilities he would genetically impart to the kids Brenner would experiment on.
Alternatively, the box could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. The prequel shows that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back hours later as a different person. Throughout the play, he struggles with the influence of a malevolent force, much like how the character Will was influenced by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.
The Power of Fear
The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine demonstrates how utterly horrifying the event was for him. While he controls the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between him and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to become stronger.
This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the ultimate battle to come.
